Site-specific Sound Installation.
Welt am Draht unfolds as a site-specific sound installation in which perception and identity begin to disintegrate through a dense layering of sonic fragments. Voices are reversed, languages collide, and narrative sequences fracture, producing a space where the listener can no longer clearly distinguish cause from effect or self from system.
The work draws on Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s World on a Wire (1973), alongside Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville (1965) and Joseph Sargent’s Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970, English/Italian), assembling a constellation of films in which machines gradually override human agency. Within the installation, the soundtrack of World on a Wire is entirely reversed, forming a continuous and disorienting undercurrent, while fragments from all three films reappear in shifting combinations, sometimes intersecting, sometimes isolating themselves in unstable sequences.
Exchanges emerge unpredictably, as if one film were responding to another, blurring the line between coincidence and orchestration. The composition unfolds non-linearly, moving through abrupt transitions in which moments of death, intimacy, and tension collapse into one another.
In its final passage, an excerpt from Richard Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1868) intensifies the work toward a point of excess, where sirens rise, voices escalate, and the logic of automated control advances toward nuclear inevitability.
Conceived for a specific elevator space, the installation situates the listener within a confined, reflective environment that amplifies its disorienting effects. Suspended between movement and stasis, the audience occupies a fragile position in which perception begins to fracture, and reality itself appears as a constructed system on the verge of collapse.
